about

This audio track was recorded during a program that happened at Pullman National Monument and State Historic Site on October 3, 2015, as part of the Tenth Annual Chicago Calling Arts Festival and Chicago Artists Month. The program, which included a soundwalk and performance, was co-presented by Pullman National Monument and State Historic Site, Outdoor Afro, Midwest Society for Acoustic Ecology and Borderbend Arts Collective.

The performance included Chicago Phonography, with texts read by Camille Ann Brewer, Toni Asante Lightfoot and Yolanda Bradley-Crocker. The texts pertained to this site and Pullman Porters; they included "Rising from the Rails: Pullman Porters and the Black Middle Class" by Larry Tye; "FDR, A. Philip Randolph, and the Desegregation of the Defense Industries"; and A. Philip Randolph's speech during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.

The title of this track, "All He Expected in Return," is taken the last page of "Rising from the Rails: Pullman Porters and the Making of the Black Middle Class" by Larry Tye. Toni Asante Lightfoot read a passage from "Rising from the Rails" during this segment of the performance.

Chicago Calling is a multi-arts collaboration festival; during the Tenth Annual Chicago Calling Arts Festival people in Chicago work with people outside of Chicago — both here in the U.S. and abroad. These collaborations include a range of art forms, such as music, dance, film, literature, and intermedia — and they are prepared or improvised. Some Chicago Calling events involve live feeds between Chicago and other locations.

The 2015 Chicago Calling Arts Festival was part of the 20th Annual Chicago Artists Month, which highlights the work of hundreds of artists throughout Chicago with performances, exhibitions, open studios, tours and neighborhood art walks. The 20th annual Chicago Artists Month (CAM) celebrates the City as Studio: from October 1 – November 15, 2015. Join this community-contributed showcase of Chicago's artists and creatives and experience art in the parks, dance in the neighborhoods, installations in the alley, and concerts on the front porch. CAM is presented by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events in collaboration with the Chicago Park District and numerous community partners.
